I once had a problem with coon hunters and firewood pilferers driving in a remote crossing over a road ditch. I parked a disc across the drive to block it.
The next night when no one was home, someone drove in our yard and shot out a mercury vapor yard light.
Speaking of firewood, I read in a history of Omaha that in 1857 a firewood dealer had problems with pilferage. He took about 20 pieces of firewood, augered a 2" hole in the center, filled them with gun powder, and tapped a plug back in the end.
He then put them on the end of the stack where they would be easy to snitch. After the neighbor's wood burning kitchen ranges began blowing up at random, the pilferage stopped.
