The General was Cletrac's(Cleveland Tractor Co.)venture from the world of track type tractor into the wheel tractor world. They did not continue, but sold the General blueprints and tooling to The B.F. Avery Co. of Louisville, Ky. who were implement manufacturers for a lot of firms. These leading inplement manufacturing compaies of longtime fame were known as short line manufacturers because they did not build power plants. The General became the B.F. Avery "A" tractor with a few minor changes. The history of the Avery Co. is long and productive. The B.F. Avery Co. Of Lousiville, KY. is not to be confused with The Avery Co.of Peoria,Illinois who built both steam and gas engines. The B.F. Avery Co. was purchased by Minnieapolis-Moline who produced the "BF" which replaced the Avery model "R" which was an advanced "A". I owned a "BF" for a couple of years and also an Avery"A" which I managed to trade for an Earthmaster I wanted badly. M.M.already had a model "R" in therir lineup,so they changed the designation to "BF" Search the archives on this site for posts made by a guy Calling himself "Alberta Mike" and e-mail him to ask if he has a copy of the history of the Avery and General tractors available that he compiled about the time he retired from school teaching.
