I recently purchaced a bantam excavator w/ a 4-71 detroit. It had no radiator cap when I got it, so I filled the radiator to about 3" below the top and put a new cap on it 7#. At start up it pushes about 3 gal out the top of the radiator. The thermostat is good. I checked the flow on the radiator, and it seems to be clear w/ no restrictions. The water pump is pumping the correct direction. It runs about 180 deg. when operating, and runs great. It almost apears that the radiator is aquiring exhaust or blower pressure. It even overflows the radiator when just cranking, and I just don't think that I could get that kind of exhaust buildup w/o the engine running.
