That's a huge problem now in Kansas - several athletic fields have been stripped of copper lighting wire to the tune of about $10,000 per field. They are even stripping the copper piping out of houses under construction. It is all a cycle though - when I was a rookie cop in the 70s they were after aluminum and we arrested two morons for ripping the siding off the backs of several houses in the daylight. They were thinking no one would notice if they just did the backs while people were at work.
