When timing a 1943 Allis WC engine you can time with the coil wire with a modern timing light. On most of them the flywheel has two marks 180 degrees apart. When timing with the coil wire you get one timing light flash on each of the two timing marks on the flywheel for each revolution of the flywheel/crankshaft. Very easy to see and bright. If you time on #1 cylinder you only get one flash every other revolution; about 1/4 as visible and 1/4 as easy to see. This applies to all in line, 4 cylinder, 4 stroke, spark ignition engines that have two timing marks 180 degrees apart on the flywheel. This works nice at slow idle speed and to check the mechanical advance function on distributors when RPM is increased to "high idle" and/or "full RPM". Try it, I think that you will like it.
