: : : I was proudly driving my case V? tractor in my pasture when an old gentleman stopped and asked me if I enjoyed my thumbs, confused I asked why because I am sort of attached to them, I had my thumbs under the spokes of the steering wheel inside it, and if I dropped off I a hole and turned the front wheels He informed me that my thumb would probally be behind me under my shredder. I guess power steering and wide fronts kind of spoils you.

: : The old gentlemen must know what there talking about because , First they are old and still have there thumbs. When I was younger and on a narrow front end tractor I too heard a similar story. I still have my thumbs. He must of been right. If the Young would listen to the Old more often .-- OH the knowledge we would have.--

: I guess that falls into the same catagory as keeping your thumb on the same side of the crank as your fingers. A backfiring '36 Chevy taught a younger me that lesson. There's also a knack for pulling the crank out as you turn it... we threw one about fifty feet in the air after it whirled at 600 rpm for a moment. I guess if we hadn't been driving behind Dad's back he might have taught us about that beforehand. Foolish youth, Me

Reminds me of when I was much younger and raking hay for the neighbor. Minneapolis Molines back then you could stand up, by swinging the seat to the side. Neighbor had a son with polio, so he equipped all tractors with a steering ball.
Anyway, I was raking hay with the MM, standing up over the PTO shield, and boom! Hit a chuckhole. I remember rolling and rolling and then running and running to catch the tractor! I'd been knocked right under the chin with the steering ball and off the tractor.
Neighbor asked me why it took so long to rake that field. I had spent lot of time to rake the field over again, where the tractor had been meandering while I was off it. Only had black and blue chin. Could haave been much worse.
