Pull the head out, helicoil or timecert all four plug holes while you are there, reinstall head. They will be better than any number of threads cut into the aluminum cylinder head. The later heads do have more threads, but are expensive and not as strong as just putting steel inserts in. The Ford recomended fix is to replace the head, mainly because they make more money selling you a head for a grand.
I think $3800 is very steep, at that price I would be questioning if it would be worth just putting a reman engine in.
