Many pelleted feeds are "whole" feeds that require little or no forage-Purina Strategy, for example. a lot of performance horses get very little if any hay- in fact, many get very little if any turnout. I WISH I WAS IN A SITUATION WHERE I HAD 5 HORSES ON 40 ACRES. How do the horses look? You feed grain for flat topline and hay for a fat belly- and the topline is what creates health and performance. In the winter, you won't see any ribs- too much hair! Can't speak to the cattle, but based on the junk I've seen in some round bales lately, they might as well be chewing on trees.
