Our horses leave the stall in March (depending on the weather) and get hay until the grass grows, then not until there's nothing to eat. We have 10 places from 1/2 to 1 acre that we rotate with 2 horses per. The stallion and gelding gets a scoop of pellets a day (because we ride them) and pick over about two bales of oat straw a week if grass is low. If we put out hay when there is still plenty of grass, they use it as a bed after thier belly is full. Mares and babies are the same, just getting a scoop of vitamins/minerals until they want more. I wouldn't worry too much unless they look bad.
