we ran both , didnt seem to matter, both pulley types ran good. maybe the paper was a little easier on the leather belts. either type you had to ground the tractor when doing belt work, the static charge would really wake you up. used to just lay a chain over the drawbar so it would touch the ground. our old elevator was belt drive, without the chain, the tractor would knock you on yer butt!!!!
