You may have had a typo, but your info is right on the money.
Many, many, long hours were spent with the one wheel spinning. We wore out brakes like you said and steering parts and bushings but I don't ever remember wearing a differential out. Tires yes, rearend no. Sometimes we had the tires watered and sometimes not. Sometimes one was watered and the other not.
My dad snaked logs and we farmed some with mules and draft horses, we had the same problem with them. One would be diggin in pulling and the other mule would lose his footing.
Most of the trouble with mules was that I got my rearend tore up, and not the animal.
