That problem happens a good bit of the time on solenoid shift engagement type starters. G.M. starters on the diesel pickup trucks had this when the batteries got weak. The way I solved this problem and saved on expensive starter repairs was to cut the battery cable to the starter and install a Ford type solenoid in the line. Transfer the small power wires from tne main post of the present starter to the hot side of the new solenoid, other side to the regular starter large post. Cut the original solenoid feed wire and reconnect it to the small energizing terminal of the new solenoid. Take the end from the original starter solenoid small post and put a terminal on the end and connect this to the big battery post of the starter so that it gets current the same time the starter does. If the present solenoid has an ignition bypass connection on it, you will need the same type for the new solenoid. If not the Ford type needs only a hot connection from the start post on switch and a good ground for the base of it. This way the solenoid you added takes the load and will not hang engaged like the other type does. Ask me how I know that? Several high priced starter repairs berfore coming to this solution!
