A well respected local veterinarian went to Russia on a "cultural exchange" trip in the '70's. His most enduring recollection was in a tractor repair shop. Everyone seemed very comfortable with talking to him, through interpreters. They're talking, with great relish, about the political problems in Russia, etc., etc. Someone is operating a forge, with large amounts of cinders and crud coming out of the forge and settling on everything in the shop. Someone else is repairing a tractor engine, and is getting ready to put the head back on it. Cinders are settling all over the place, and the guy working on the tractor doesn't even wipe them off the block and pistons before fitting the head- too involved in his conversation. It's like they're just going through the motions, and don't have any pride or responsibility in what they're doing.
