If your MRI is negative and no nerve/disc damage, I'm a big believer in building up the lower back muscles using a hyper-extension bench like Howard H described.
It takes up little space and is not expensive.
My back still goes out once a year due to over exertion but is nothing more than severe muscle strain.
Pain is excruciating but not as bad as the wife's "I told you so !".
I'm 56 and been doing hypers 3 times a week since 1980, on the advice of a chiropractor no less. Good luck........
