Two approaches: 1. Remind him about it in case it has slipped his mind.
2. Get a written quote from the local (most expensive) workshop and ask him to write out the cheque for you. I like the previous suggestion about starting to do it yourself. That should work. It works on me! Hey, you might enjoy doing it yourself anyway, and you can ask here for help on how to go about it! Good Luck and Merry Christmas.
