The oil is checked with the two petcocks on the LHS of the oil pan. If it comes out of the bottom one and not the top (although some up top is probably fine) you're set. For the year, there is a raised boss underneath the #1 spark plug at the top of the block. This will have a serial number stamped in it which is probably close enough (although unlikely to be the same unless it's a really early tractor) to the tractor serial number to date it. Alternatively most castings have a casting code that will be two numbers and a letter with what looks like a screw head between them.
