Hey Dan If you need to monitor your battery's state of charge you need a volt meter. The amp meter will only show the amount of charge going into the battery, while the volt meter will tell you how much voltage/potential IS in the battery. A/c generators/alternators generate as much as 1/3 the rated output at idle, REGARDLESS OF CONSTRUCTION or # of wires. GUIDO.
