Only way it could be timing on a 9N is if the cam gear broke. Take off the distributor cap and then with help from some one watch to see if the rotor turns when the engine is turned over. If it turns then theres no way it could be timing because of the way the distributor is driven. A back firs could be caused by a carb problem and the main jet might be clogged and causing a lean condition which will make an engine back fire
