If I'm not flying by at 70mph, I usually try and OFFER help. Many times people don't want it, sometimes they look nervous. Doesn't matter, at least I offered and I don't feel offended if they refuse.
Last year, funny thing happened. Noticed a minivan in the ditch of the cloverleaf entrance ramp of the freeway. A young man was trying to jack it up. Pulled over on the shoulder, offered help. He was polite and grateful. He had broken the bead when he slid off the curved ramp (probably going too fast). I said let's get it out of the ditch back onto the shoulder to change the tire. While I was on my back hooking up my chains to his underbody, I heard a "What's going on?". Looked up to see a State Policeman. Kept working and said "just pulling him out of the ditch". Officer said "Stop and get up". I got up. He walked over to the kid, asked if he was armed (he said no) and started to frisk him. Now, the kid was as nice and polite as I was, but the officer must have sensed something. Asked him if he had a record (yes, he was on parole for b/e). WOW, I thought. Officer asked if he could look in the van. Kid said "sure". Cop stuck his head in the van and came back out with a joint and a baggie. Told the kid to turn around and kneel down and slapped the cuffs on. Told me to leave as "this was his van now". Don't know why the cop zeroed in on that kid. Heck, I think I looked more nervous than the kid. Kinda felt bad for the kid as he was as polite and friendly as could be.
Anyway, I still stop and offer help if I can, especially if I'm in jeans and in my truck with tools. I'd like to think someone would do the same for my wife and/or daughters.
