When I brought one from Ont.to MI about 5 years ago through Port Huron I made no pervious arrangements and had only a bill of sale. My biggest problem was convincing customs I was a collector and would not be farming with it. It took a while, but I was able to talk my way through and it cost me nothing. Proof of employment would have been helpful. My employer ID made the difference. If? I ever try it again, I will call first and ask a ton of questions. Don't know what I would have done if they wouldn't have let me in.
