Having worked in the cold for decades, here's a few ideas.

The best glove I ever found was a US military model that is a wool glove with a leather glove or mitten as on overglove. Works great.

Second to that is the same thing in a commercial model with a mitten and a flap opening for the fingers to be used if you need to.

A new idea I heard about was this strap thing you wrap around your wrist that has some sort of heat crystals in it when you shake it. People say it does indeed work and keep your hands warm because it warms the blood going that direction.

Since the need here is for splitting firewood, I would split the wood when it's warm out and negate the need for gloves. Worked for me.
