It has been a while since I have seen one and hope it is a long time til the next one, but I think I remember the lifter cover, on the side of the block, being wider or taller for a 216 vs. the 235. And the 230/250 series deleted that cover entirely. Years ago a friend had a 52 or 53 with the OHC6 Pontiac engine in it. That engine was based on the 230/250s and took the same bellhousing.
