Its true that the end of the high voltage winding is connected to one of the low voltage terminals for a ground return. But the fact remains that the coil has a minuscule core, and that makes the high voltage output dependent on the direction of current and thus the direction of the magnetic field stored in the core before the points open. The direction where the polarity marks MATCH the battery polarity gets a better spark than the other way. Gerald J.
