I've tried to keep up with it - and it seems to be true. The engine oils in Europe are keeping the antiwear additives of zinc and phosphorus. The reasons stated are #1 Europe doesn't have to meet the same emission regs as us, and #2 European people are more demanding and not so much a "throwaway society" as we are here. Here - it's been dropped in most new oils - but not all. I've used Shell Rotella-T for many years - and it HAS dropped the additive in the newest "triple protection" forumla.
I think oil WITH the additive will always be available here - but may not be so easy to find. You may have to order it in and pay a little more - and not be able to make out on sales which will probably just have the new oils. Racing oils, and some HD use oils will keep the additives.
From what I've read, there's been a search for an alternative - but nothing has been found that gives as good protection from certain types of wear as the zinc-phosphorus compound. Some companies are using boron now - which is inferior.
Year's back many oils did not have it - especially non-detergent oils. And, engines didn't fall apart - although they may not have lasted as long as some newer stuff.
