It's illegal to kill rattlers in Michigan as well. Last time I saw one I was about 4 years old (50 years ago) and as I was walking over to see what it was my older brother pulled me away and likely saved my life. Our neighbor came over and killed the snake. The next day our pictures were in the local paper due to the heroic actions of my brother and the neighbor.
Sometimes it's better to seek forgiveness than ask for permission.
