Wool keeps you warm wet or dry. Still hard to beat. First order of business is to eat a good breakfast. Your goal should be around 2500 calories if it's real cold. (Minus 30 F) A little less if not so cold. When I'm hunting in the kind of weather you're talking about I usually wear a ski base layer, not heavy weight, with wool on top of that and then waterproof gear on top. Very little heavyweight clothing. When we work in the woods in the winter, if the temp is above zero it feels too warm. That's heavy work, of course. For super cold weather in the wind we throw something like a sheepskin mackinaw over the top of everything. Snowmobile boots are hard to beat for warmth because they use a wool felt liner. Chopper mitts with wool liners are great.
