Farmall Cub single plow question

[Question pertains to a 1958 Farmall Cub with hydraulics and a fast-hitch.] Perhaps someone can tell me what I'm doing wrong (one of my wife's favorite subjects). On Thanksgiving weekend, I finally had a chance to remove my faithful mott hammer mower with the fancy fast-hitch and hooked up my single bottom plow (for the first time). Took me about 10 minutes, including installing the guide disk. I had all day and couldn't wait to get out on my 10 acre field. I was hoping to plow 3 or 4 acres; a completely speculative goal as I've never plowed a field before. Two years ago, the field was used to grow wheat, so it's fairly recently worked. I'm slowly converting it to hybrid black walnuts. Anyhow, the plow bit down 8 to 10 inches for about 10 feet and then refused to do anything but scratch the surface thereafter. From that brief description, can anyone tell me what am I doing wrong?
I think I may need to trade it in for a Super A, etc., but that won't help in the short run. In the long run, I'm told that there's not a hay baler that operates from the Farmall Cub (I'm planting red clover between the walnut trees), so I'll probably trade up to a more powerful tractor in a year or two.
