What kind of shape is the linkage in. After that many years the linkage gets a lot of wear. Both of my late 70's trucks had to have the linkage rebuilt. It wasn't difficult, just welded the pivot points up and redrilled them. On the knob part I welded it up and filed to fit. There are also little plastic bushings that wear out causing metal to metal wear. This is a good time to replace those as well. I did this on Fords, but most mechanical linkage clutches are similar.
