The block heater is the best choice. I do use an oil heater on a JD 1630 that doesn't have a block heater and it works every time. If it's going to dip down real low, I will use a oil heater and block heater together. I have never had to use ether on a JD, but I have on an IH, and a Massey, but only sparingly.
