Hey folks, I have a '99 Explorer I bought to resale that needs a transmission. It has the overhead valve (old pushrod style) 4.0 V6 engine with the 5R55E trans.
I also purchased a rolled '00 Explorer as a donor vehicle that has the 4.0 SOHC engine and the 5R55E trans.
Junkyards with exchange info. tell me the 2 transmissions are not interchangeable but they cannot tell me why. The only visible difference (looking from underneath, the OHV trans. is not out yet) is the OHV trans. has a bump in the bottom of the pan the SOHC trans does not, I assume is probably hiding an extra solenoid of some sort in there. Mabye the torque curve between the 2 engines are different? Mabye need to keep the OHV torque converter in it?
I'd appreciate any info anyone had on this. Thanks
