Hey Brad. The gun you mentioned has a value of somewhere in the $150 to $200 range in used condition. I would suggest that you keep it in its original state and keep it dry and clean as a memory to your gramps. Maybe someday the 16 guage will come around as an oddity collector's item but not yet. I have a J.C. Higgins 12 guage that my dad bought new and hunted with. I would not spend a dime on it but I will never sell it.
