Here's my method for getting them tight the first time. It takes an assistant, but no mechanical experience(wife, mother, kids, anybody). Lay them out as MrG said, drive the wheel on so that it is as far forward on the chain as possible. Tie a piece of twine onto each outside chain on this end. Have your assistant behind the wheel pulling up and back on the strings like trying to stop a horse while you back up slowly until the chain is 3/4 or more on the tire. Then hook it up and you're done. Its as tight as its going to get. They go on perfect the first time every time. Then do the other wheel. You can turn it all around and go forward if that's more convenient. It takes less time than it took me to type this, and your assistant won't get dirty.
