I put studs in a set of new snow tires back in the 1970's for my wife who was taking our daughter to high school. They didn't close the schools like they do now. She was amazed by the traction on ice. She said cars were stuck on hills and just spinning. She just pulled around them to get out of the way. The state of MD outlawed those studs in the late 70's. The post office trucks are still using them.
In 1980 I bought a used Mercury Bobcat that came out of WVA and it had studs. I had to remove the studs in order to get the car state inspected. Hal PS; Here's that Bobcat.
