MF Poor said: (quoted from post at 08:49:41 10/18/07) Property values are still climbing here, even with the slump in the housing market. Our area is in big demend with developers. It's only a question of which one, me or the inspector, to sell out first. When that time comes, I'm going as far out in the sticks as money permits. No more dealing with PROGRESS if I can help it.

There was a time when neighbors were like family and would look out for one another... Ain't so anymore. Someday that inspector / neighbor is going to need to borrow something or need a favor from you... just keep that in mind...

Case in point, I moved to my current place in the sticks about 3 years ago. I grew up in a small farming community, 3rd generation on the farm. Moved in across the road from a dairy farmer and he and I get along well he needs help I help, no questions, I need help, same deal.

1/2 mile down the road lives the local township fire chief. So the first fall I'm at my new place I'm burning leaves in the driveway and the chief whips in... gives me a rash of crap about no burn permit... I get a citation for $50... Gee wiz, neighbor (farmer afore mentioned) across the road (lifetime resident of the same place) burns mountains of wood, waste, scrap, whatever at least once a month... he never bothers to get a permit... He just shakes his head in disbelief and disgust with the whole incident.

So anywho fast forward a year. Workin in the shop one evening and the fire chief whips in says he was told I do sandblasting on the side, sure do. Wants 2 pedal tractors blasted. Said it'd take me a couple of hours. Asks me how much and I instantly without his knowing doubled my hourly rate... He kinda balked at my price and I had to remind him in a friendly manner about that $50 I had to make up thanks to his neighborly gesture a year earlier. He had me do the blasting as I was still the cheapest and closest around but he kinda felt I wasn't being "neighborly".

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you... live by the golden rule...
