They aren't a bad transmission.The majority of the problems come from overloading the transmissions with heavy trailer loads,not shifting out of overdrive when towing heavy,and not servicing the transmission regularly. The bands have to be adjusted,the filter changed,and quality fluid used. I have 2 1st generation diesel 4x4's, both with over 200,000 miles and both with the original transmissions in them.I tow with both of them,but they are maintained.
