The First reason is to allow the front wheels to fit between rows. Tighter rows meant single front wheels.
The other reason is to get more directional steering. For example, turning hard to the left makes the left tire push against the forward motion of the tractor so it gets that grip. (so the front end doesn"t slide forward)
