They are fairly common out here on the high plains where we have trouble with corn borers. The reel mainly keeps the trash swept off the header and keeps it from bridging up. Most folks drive them with a hydraulic motor.
Be sure and don't use sucker rod for reel tines! It tends to get brittle near the weld and you'll almost certainly wind up swallowing one when it snaps off!
