I really don't know, but is it possible that a valve was stuck open in the carburator, allowing gas top drain from the tank into the crankcase? Cranking the engine might cause the gas to leak past the rings into the cylinder and as the engine choked down the piston kicked back pumping gas back through the carb. I had gas leak into the crankcase on a Snapper lawnmower with a horizontal shaft Briggs engine and it got gas into the cylinder. Drained crankcase, put in new oil, took spark plug out, turned engine over after fixing plug wire so it wouldn't spark and ignite gas, and pumped gas out spark plug hole and exhaust pipe. had a clean engine which needed to be broke in again. Curious to know the cause of your problem.
