Interesting how different the experiences are for people using the same oil. Like Old, I have run Valvoline 10-40 or now, 5-30, exclusively since about 1970. I've opened up 2 engines, both were as clean as a whistle inside. The most recent high mileage pickup has gone to my nephew and now has about 325,000 miles on the engine and has never had the heads off and does not burn oil.
But I won't claim that is only the oil. I religiously change oil and filter (Baldwin) every 3000 miles, I always let a cold engine idle up to good oil pressure, I downshift rather than lug an engine hard, and I almost always get the engine up to operating tempertare (no short commutes, in other words).
