I just looked at a bank barn yesterday and noticed the gap between the bank and foundation. Been past it a bunch but never noticed the gap. It was about 4 ft or so. The barn was built on flat ground but had the ramp going to the upper floor. One other thing I have always noticed is that barns on old farms are always east and sometimes northeast of the house and are down hill. That kept the smell down to a minimum in the house when the windows were open and the down hill thing was to keep manure from washing down and into the well. The gap thing though has got me thinking. I may have to go look in some of the old setting up a farmstead books grandpa got when at Purdue back in 29.
