I peeled the top off a nest of ground hornets while mowing along the road above the house several years ago with my John Deere H and #5 sicle bar mower. When I saw the black cloud boil out of the ground I realized my bad. I yanked the clutch back and the throttle back jumped and ran like h**l. (I'm allergic to bee stings) don't care much for the pain either. Got away without getting stung but the old H sat there idling for almost 2 hours at about a hundred RPM until it ran out of gas, bees surrounding it. Wife asked if I was afraid somebody would try to steal the tractor, told her it would be worth it to watch. Along about 11:00 pm I took a can of gas up and started up the tractor and pulled it away then dumped some gas in the bee hole and lit an old rag from the tractor and solved the bee problem "Diehard style".
