There is nothing I can add, so far as how to deal with the "buyer".... but (there is always a "but") talk to the bank or whoever billed the $15 for the returned check. Tell them your story, cry if you have to and try to get some or all of the $15 back. At this point, this is the only profit or loss in the transaction. If you have a check which you think is questionable, tell the bank that, when you go in to cash it. Also tell them they need not credit your account until it clears. This way their money is not at risk and negotiate, what the fee if any will be if it is returned. Much of moving paper checks around is now done electronically, expediently and at lower cost than in the "old" days.
