The '82 thru the '86s were the black years for GMs light truck automatic transmissions. They got better in '87 thru '90, finally got 'em figured out in '91 and then went totally electic with that design in '93.
1983 4X4s with automatics came from the factory with either the 700 over drive or a straight 400 three speed. 2 wheel drive automatics came with the 350C or 200C, which were "lockers" (torque converter lock up).
Over the years tho, an awfully lot of those 700s got swapped out for the 350s that folks were used to in years past. Fuel mileage took a huge hit, but they were more reliable than those first overdrives.
Like the other guys say, retanglar pan is the 700, square pan with the corner cut off is a 350, and the 400 had a kidney shaped pan.
