What kind of tractor are you working on? On the old 2 cylinder deeres, you take a wire and touch it briefly to the generator tab and the battery tab on the voltage regulator at the same time with the battery connected and the tractor switch on but without the tractor running. This will polarize the generator. Not sure about how others work. Only been around deere.
