You can believe whatever you want.... I believe that the Walmart branded oil is just as good as anything else out there, and probably better than some out there. IN fact I know that it's better than some out there. I did a brake and FWD clutch job on one tractor already from using Ultramar oil that didn't meet the specs, but was advertised to by the dealer.... It was walmart oil that went in afterwards for no reason other than to flush the crap out of the tractor... and lo and behold it started working better. The brake noise went away. The gear whine went away... and it cost half as much. I'm not going to say that the additives will stand up to the long service intervals that were recomended by the manufacturer using their oil, but when you're in the position of dumping oil every hundred hours to flush crap out of a system, or you're fighting a battle with leaks on old equipment, I see absolutely no reason to not use walmart oil, or Canadian Tire oil, or whatever other cheap oil that meets the spec for the machine.
SO far as the engine oils are concerned, LOOK A THE API RATING. If it's got it, it's good. That's all I worry about. Walmart may sell a lot of junk, but they also sell a lot of quality products at very competitive prices. I for one don't see a thing wrong with the oil. There's just too many people in this world that are so spooked by "oil" that they have to go and buy the expensive oil from a dealer, and the dealers are glad to take your money. When somebody shows me a difference where a lubricant that met "spec" underperformed, then I might listen, but I've yet to see the evidence. That goes for the snake oil salesmen that try to hawk the high end products that are supposed to save you piles of money on repairs.... In some cases it works, and in most cases those operations have very good preventative maintenance programs anyway.... so if they did that with normal lubricants they'd probably have about the same luck. Sorry, but that's ho I see it.
