Same with cars, the MPG has not improved and some have dropped since that time frame.
The best mpg truck I had was an old 1978 GMC with a 4 speed and I had stuck a 1969 327 with 2bbl carb. in there for awhile. Same truck was also the worst when I switched to a 454 and an auto tranny.
I have been driving a 1996 Ram 2500 360 gas auto 4x4 ext. cab and it really isn't too bad considering how big it is and what I can do with it.
