only one wire (a) would go from the generator to the battery, the F lead goes to ground. With out the regulator the generator will discharge the battery when not running unless you put a switch or relay in line with it. the generator will put out from 15 to 40 amps depending on size, so it will need to be a heavy switch. Connecting it directly to the battery will polarize it. why do you not want to use a regulator?
