You should be able to, if it's rated as gear or trans fluid to begin with. Mobil has a line of such lubes. When we lived up outside Duluth and it got to be -20 or so I got so I would start our gas MH50 (used 5W-30 in the engine) out in the shed and let it idle for 15 or 20 minutes. This gave the 80W-90 trans and hydraulic fluid time to get sort of whipped around enough to flow. (That was the type of fluid that the owners manual called for, and if I recall right, even the Harvest King stuff I bought back then exceeded the requirements.) Then it would work fairly normally, once it was warmed up a bit. But if you just jumped on after the engine got going, everything was really slow. I dunno if he was b.s. ing or what, but a friend of mine claims that back in the 50's up that way people would start and engage the pony engines on Cat dozers in that weather, go drink coffee for half an hour, and then come out and start the diesel.
