painted lug nuts

I am finishing the painting of a John Deere trator. Actually a bolt holds the front wheels on. Does anyone have an idea on what can be done so the wrench doesn't knock the paint off the head of the bolt? Is there something that a person can dip the head into that would stop rust so they wouldn't have to be painted? I admit that I am a cheapskate, I don't want to buy new bolts from John Deere that may be rust resistant.
