Many thxx to all for the comments. I wasn't at all sure whether the term "tractor" as in tractor-trailer (truck) was in use then; apparently it was, and Garford was using the term to describe a truck chassis designed to pull a trailer rather than one designed to have a stake or dump "body" installed.
Went thru my few other old-truck ads and only found one, a 1917 Denby, showing a semi-rig; a drawing, not a photo, it shows the trailer completely horizontal, with a half-frame over the wheels; must've has something besides a fifth wheel for a trailer connection, unless it was partially recessed down into the truck frame.
